Diet Fads – Some Smart, Some Scary

Dieting. Not many people like it, but lots of people have tried it. What some people don’t realize is that diets, some laughable and some scary, have existed long before the Atkins diet became popular.

1800s

Vinegar Diet – British poet Lord Byron claimed to have lost 60 pounds by soaking his food in vinegar before eating it, although some historians believe he had an eating disorder.

Graham’s Diet – Sylvester Graham, father of the ever-popular Graham Cracker was a Presbyterian minister who believed people should avoid coffee, alcohol, tea, spices, and meat. His followers, “Grahamites”, ate pure water, fresh vegetables and fruits, high fiber foods, and whole wheat.

The Proper Diet – Good Foods For Low Body Fat, Vibrant Health, and Longevity!

Part Five of the Seven-Part Series:  Why Do American Women Get Fat? What You Can Do About It.

The Problem:

At any given time two-thirds of all American adults are on a diet. Of those, 29 percent are men and 44 percent are women. Yet, only five percent of dieters will keep the weight off. In fact, most will actually regain their lost weight, plus more. With all the money being spent on diets and diet products, Americans aren’t losing weight. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, overweight and obesity has reached epidemic levels. One of the main reasons dieters fail at their “get fit” attempts and remain a statistic is because they choose “fad diets” as opposed to a balanced, healthy diet. In fact the weight-loss industry makes its billions because “millions succumb to ‘quick-fix’ claims, seeking a (non-existent) effortless weight-loss method.

Why Restrictive and Unbalanced Diets Don’t Work – How They Contribute to Weight Gain and Poor Health

There is no quick fix for fat loss, optimal health, and longevity. But, the good news is that there is a way, and I can help you down that path.   I am not interested in attacking any particular product or program by name. However, I do want to expose the truth about the $58 billion Diet Industry (and rising). Many of the programs and products marketed today are basically gimmicks full of false promises, magic potions, and misleading propaganda. Most of these counter-productive systems result in yo-yo dieting and can be quite dangerous. My hope is that the next time another quick-fix diet system (or product) surfaces, you will know better than to believe the hype, or at least that you’ll think twice before you waste your time, money, health, and sanity. In fact, no sensible diet program will ever compromise your physical or mental health for the sake of looking good!

Diet And Weight Loss

People who lose weight quickly by “crash” dieting or other extreme measures usually gain it all back or gain even more of the pounds that they lost because they haven’t permanently changed their eating habits. As a general rule though, most nutrition experts recommend never going below 1,000-1,200 calories a day if you’re dieting on your own. This explains why it’s crucial to diet sensibly with a suitable, rather than a very low calorie intake so that you lose fat rather than muscle.

In Search of The Perfect Cleansing Diet

My friend was in her mid fifties as she rambled on about cleansing diets and detoxification. Out of respect for the fact she was older than I, my initial ridicule was stuffed back down my throat and I politely listened. She began to talk about these cleansing processes that initially I thought sounded rather barbaric. Milk thistle just sounded like something prickly to drink. But apparently it was part of this cleansing diet she was speaking about, so again, I nodded politely.

All detox diets are a little bit different. Some restrict food down to almost nothing while others allow for mostly veggies, beans, fruit, and rice. There are a few things that you should expect when beginning a detox diet, so that you can receive the full detox diets benefits.

Life Is One Damn Diet After Another

A common expression is that we’re “going on a diet.” The phrase suggests that, like a vacation trip, there is a beginning and an end. We dream of the day we will reach our weight goal and how wonderful it will be when we don’t have to lead a life of painful deprivation.

In the back of our minds, there is a comforting little tape playing, promising us that when our weight loss campaign is over, we’ll be able to stop counting calories, carbohydrates, or fats. We long for the day when we no longer have to clench our teeth as we refuse a favorite dish that always causes us to salivate in our sleep. We reach for the carrot and celery sticks without anticipation or enthusiasm while torturing ourselves with visions of the special treats we’ll enjoy when the diet is over.
