“Only 6% of people realise being fat isn’t healthy”

I heard this amazing statistic on the news today.

Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson said only 6% of people understood the health risks of being overweight.

“Many people see fat as a vanity issue rather than a health issue and they need to see it as a health issue.”

Now I can understand people (myself included) being overweight and not being happy about it, but do people really think there are no health issues related to being fat? Talk about burying your head in the sand!

I accept that advertising can be very sophisticated but I have yet to see one extolling the health giving properties of pizza and doughnuts.

Dr Susan Jebb, head of nutrition and research at the Medical Research Council and government advisor on the campaign, said in the modern world it was “utterly astonishing” that anyone stayed slim.

“This is something even for those families who have a healthy weight now.

“We have got to give people the information they need to make informed decisions.”

I guess you can only give people the information and then personal responsibility takes over.

I don’t believe the statistics…sure, eat badly, don’t exercise and make excuses about genetics and over active thyroids, but I won’t ever believe that 94% of people think obesity is healthy.
